I found out I was HIV positive in 1985, during the early years of the AIDS crisis, before there were any treatments to fight AIDS. Talk about scary. I was probably infected by the HIV virus a few years before that, and was already having symptoms of a weakened immune system. My T4 cells had fallen to around 350, and I had swollen lymph nodes. I didn't know what my viral load was - the quantity of AIDS virus in my blood - because there were no tests measuring HIV levels back then.

Venereal diseases. The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition. Diseases that can be passed to other persons through sexual contact. AIDS, gonorrhea, herpes, and syphilis are examples of sexually transmitted diseases.
Venereal eye disease? Strangely enough, nearly all diseases which are considered to be sexually transmitted diseases can have significant ocular involvement. This can occur as a direct infection, as with gonorrhea or chlamydia, or as a secondary infection, as with AIDS. Therefore, it is important to inform your ophthalmologist of any sexually transmitted diseases which you may have been treated for if you are having an eye problem.
VENEREAL DISEASES (from venery, i.e. the pursuit of Venus, the goddess of love), a general term for the diseases resulting from impure sexual intercourse. Three distinct affections are included under this termgonorrhoea, local contagious ulcers, known as chancres, and syphilis. At one time these were regarded as different forms of the same disease. They are, however, three distinct diseases, due to separate causes, and have nothing in common except their habitat. The cause in each case is a definite specific virus, a microorganism. In the case of gonorrhoea the virus attacks the mucous membranes, especially that of the urethra, the vagina and the uterus. Chancres attack the mucous membranes and the skin. In syphilis the whole system comes under the influence of the poison.

Along with tuberculosis, progressive reformers and social critics in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries identified venereal disease as the quintessential product of a series of transformations in American life in the post-Civil War years including the rapid growth of cities, the increase in immigration, and the changing nature of the family.
There are more than 20 venereal diseases that may be transmitted through sexual contact. There is a worldwide sexually transmitted disease epidemic right now. More than 13 million Americans get a sexually transmitted disease (also known as an STD) each year, with most of the cases occurring among people between the ages of 15 and 24. If untreated, some STDs can lead to infertility. Some of the other sexually transmitted diseases may lead to even more serious medical problems.
